Applying for a mortgage as an expat
Are you working as an expat in the Netherlands? Then you can also apply for a mortgage. This actually goes the same way as when a Dutch person applies for a mortgage. Yet for you as an expat, it is often a difficult process. There is a language barrier in most cases. In addition, finding a good mortgage advisor is also a laborious process.
Applying for a mortgage as an expat in 3 steps
Applying for a mortgage as an expat is not a complicated process, you just need to know what the right steps are. You can read here the 3 steps you need to do if you want to finance your property for sale as an expat.
Step 1 - Schedule an appointment with a mortgage broker
In the Netherlands, you have a lot of different mortgage advisers. We have divided them into three groups: dependent, semi-dependent and independent. The dependent mortgage adviser only works with one lender. So your options here are limited. The semi-dependent adviser works with several lenders. Here the options are already a little wider. The independent mortgage adviser may work with all lenders in the Netherlands. Here, you have the best chance of securing a mortgage that fully meets your wishes and requirements.
Libero Financieel is independent
Libero Financieel is an independent mortgage advisor. We are self-employed and independent. We look at all lenders when applying for a mortgage. The most important thing is that you take out a mortgage that suits your personal situation. Now and in the future. And we take care of that for you.
Step 2 - Submitting data
This is the most tedious, but also the most important step in the mortgage process. Together, we have to make sure your file is completely complete. We find that for expats this is a difficult step in the process. We will help you as best we can, but bear in mind that you will need to invest a few hours to get everything complete.
Documents we need in any case are:
- copy of your identification
- recent salary slip
- proof of current rental charge
- bank statement current account
- bank statement savings account
- employer's statement and/or letter of intent
Of course, we will help you during this step. We make it as easy as possible for you.
Step 3 - Terms and mortgage form
Finally, we discuss which mortgage form is best for you and what conditions. In the Netherlands, three mortgage forms are very popular, namely a linear mortgage, an annuity mortgage and an interest-only mortgage. The repayment-free mortgage is a form that should always be taken out in combination with a linear or annuity mortgage.
Taking out a mortgage online
Which mortgage form or combination of mortgages is best for you depends on your wishes and requirements. We discuss this during the mortgage talks we have. These do not always have to take place face to face. We also often arrange mortgages for expats entirely online. We then have contact via video call. This can be done at a time that suits you best!
